Wiki: Silly name, useful technology

First appearing in 1995, the "wiki" approach to creating interactive and collaborative Web pages quickly became the star format for social networks, but too often business also-rans. Part of the problem comes from top-down managers uncomfortable with underlings making changes without authorization, and from stories of update wars on the most famous wiki, Wikipedia, the encyclopedia written by users. But successful corporate wikis abound, including SamePage from eTouch Systems.

The SaaS Deployment Model Offered in an On Premise Wiki

The delivery approach of a traditional on-premise product or solution is typically a single installation for each implementation you want. So if you wanted, say, completely separate wikis for departments or customers, you would install the software separately for each department. That no longer needs to be the case. eTouch now offers their SamePage enterprise wiki solution with a multi-tenancy on-premise deployment model. One installation, many wikis.

Top Enterprise 2.0 Tips for Improving Workforce Collaboration in 2009

"Seed a Wiki instance at a group/department level with a specific purpose - for e.g. document processes, procedures, product requirement documents etc. Once it is successful, the Wiki concept and usage will experience strong bottom-up adoption and increase in acceptance across the organization. This approach is in variance to the practice of choosing a Wiki product on a corporate-wide basis and then asking people to use it."
- Ani Gadre, CEO

"Be strongly cognizant of security considerations when using a Wiki. This includes ensuring access controls at an instance, project/space and page level for different functions like read, edit and comment. These considerations might not be paramount early on but they definitely grow as usage increases."
- Ani Gadre, CEO

SamePage Wiki Now Boosts Enterprise Readiness with Support ...

eTouch Systems today added MySQL support and improved content import/export with MS Word to SamePage 3.3, (http://samepage.spwiki.com) the latest release of its enterprise wiki -- a collaborative website whose content can be edited by anyone in the organization who has access to it. "We're responding to the needs of enterprise customers who are demanding better integration with databases and corporate applications like MS Office, while continuing to keep SamePage very simple to use," said eTouch CEO Aniruddha Gadre. But at the same time, we continue to evolve SamePage so it provides the sophisticated administration, database and security features that IT departments require -- and that open-source wikis don't always offer."

eTouch, Open for Enterprise 2.0 Business with Mashups

"eTouch appears to be on the right track with their focus on usability and the needs of the customers, but don't take our word for it. Mike Suding, an IT Director for Citrix Systems Inc.'s Online division -- who brought the SamePage enterprise wiki to the engineering and sales departments within Citrix -- had this to say:

"Email comes and goes and we wanted a place to collect and build. Web 2.0 is about employee collaboration and empowerment and self service. That's what we're achieving with the wiki."

If eTouch can continue to deliver on their promises of better than average usability, ease of integration and a reduced dependency on in-house IT, then SamePage seems positioned well to carve out a healthy space in the increasingly competitive Enterprise Wiki market."

Wikis, Blogs, RSS Aim for the Workplace

"On a larger scale, Mike Suding introduced eTouch Systems Corp.'s SamePage enterprise wiki to Citrix Systems Inc.'s Online division, where he is IT director. The tool has improved collaboration in the engineering and sales departments, while requiring minimal IT intervention, he said.

"I can make [a user] an admin of a certain space or project and they can add their own members and invite their own people to participate and post their own texts or graphics or attachments," Suding said. Accomplishing similar goals with the existing intranet and e-mail and collaboration platform would be more complicated.

"E-mail comes and goes and we wanted a place to collect and build," Suding said. "Web 2.0 is about employee collaboration and empowerment and self service. That's what we're achieving with the wiki."
